We are all aware of the Corona Virus epidemic by now, which has caused at least 106 deaths in China to date and several cases being reported all over the world. The latest reports reveal that almost six cases in Pakistan have been reported which are suspected to be infected with the deadly virus. Precautionary measures are being advised to the authorities in order to barricade the virus from spreading in Pakistan and awareness programs are being initiated in educational institutions.
Here is everything you need to know about Corona Virus and its symptoms.
What is Corona Virus?
In December China alerted the World Health Organization (WHO) to several cases of pneumonia in Wuhan, a port city of 11 million people in the central Hubei province. Several of those infected worked at the city’s Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market, which was shut down on later on. Recent research proves that Snakes – the Chinese krait and the Chinese cobra – might be the original source of the newly discovered coronavirus that has triggered an outbreak of a deadly infectious respiratory illness in China this year. Corona is a virus that spreads in the same way as other cold-causing viruses do. Like other coronaviruses, it comes from animals. The virus is transferred when infected people cough and sneeze, by touching an infected person’s hands or face, or by touching things such as doorknobs that infected people have touched.
What are the symptoms?
The virus causes pneumonia-like symptoms. Those who have fallen ill are reported to suffer coughs, fever and breathing difficulties. In most cases, you won’t know whether you have a coronavirus or a different cold-causing virus, such as rhinovirus. But if an infection spreads to the lower respiratory tract (your windpipe and your lungs), it can cause pneumonia, especially in older people, people with heart disease, or people with weakened immune systems.
How can it be treated?
Unfortunately, there is no vaccine for coronavirus. To help prevent a coronavirus infection, do the same things you do to avoid the common cold:
- Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water or with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Keep your hands and fingers away from your eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Avoid close contact with people who are infected.
You treat a coronavirus infection the same way you treat a cold:
- Get plenty of rest.
- Drink fluids.
- Take over-the-counter medicine for a sore throat and fever. But don’t give aspirin to children or teens younger than 19; use ibuprofen or acetaminophen instead.
A humidifier or steamy shower can also help ease a sore and scratchy throat. For severe cases, treatment should include care to support vital organ functions.
